Excessive Hand and Foot Sweating

Kieren is one of the very few cosmetic doctors in Britain who specialises in all three modalities of excessive sweating - underarms, hands and soles of feet - making him an expert in this highly specialised treatment.

Excessive hand sweating, or palmar hyperhidrosis represents one of the most wide spread affections from all the forms of hyperhidrosis. This condition manifests itself by exaggerating the amount of sweat ones hands produce. This leaves people who suffer from Palmar hyperhidrosis with moist and cold hands.

Excessive foot sweating, also known as pedal hyperhidrosis, usually appears in a combination with excessive hand sweating. Patients suffering from this condition may also experience excessive armpit sweating. Solitary foot swaeting is not very common.

 What Happens During Treatment?

Using a very fine needle, Kieren will inject a small amount of Botox into 15 to 20 places about 1cm apart and spread evenly in each hand/sole of foot. Sometimes a dye is used to show up the areas where sweating is greatest and where the injections should be placed.

Unlike the use of Botox for lines and wrinkles, where the toxin is injected through the skin into the underlying muscles, in the case of excessive sweating, the toxin is injected very superficially into the skin itself. A course of treatment takes about 30 minutes.

When Will Treatment Take Effect?

Your levels of hand/foot sweating will decrease by 95% within 48 hours and the full effect will be seen within 1 week. Along with the sweating, there is a simultaneous disappearance of odour associated with the decreased sweating.

How Long Does The Treatment Last?

Most patients will experience the benefit of dryness with one treatment of Botox for about a year.

Kieren will advise you about when to return for further treatment.

What Are The Risks and Complications?

Botox is not harmful.  There may be some tiny bruises, but these fade in a few days. Occasionally there may be small persistent areas of sweating that may need a second treatment session. There is NO risk of numbness or permanent change in the skin.

There is a theoretical risk of slight weakness in the hand muscles, but this is rare and most importantly only temporary, lasting only a few days.

How Will I Feel Afterwards?

Self-assured and confident without the embarrassment often experienced in social situations.
